Finding Strength in Her Own Lane – Siti Nurhamizah Strikes Towards Victory

For Madam Wati’s daughter, Siti Nurhamizah, growing up with an intellectual impairment meant learning to navigate the world at her own pace. From young, Siti experienced delays in speech and found physical activity and social interaction challenging. Simple tasks required extra effort, and confidence did not come easily.
As a mother, Madam Wati often wondered how these challenges might affect Siti’s independence, self-esteem and future. She remembers feeling a mix of sadness, worry and grief when Siti was formally diagnosed after developmental delays were observed. Yet, she made a conscious choice to focus on Siti’s strengths and interests. A turning point came when Siti enrolled in Delta Senior School and had to choose a co-curricular activity. Despite being unsure at first, she showed an interest in sports. Knowing that Siti had the hand strength for bowling, Madam Wati encouraged her to give it a try.

Siti later joined the Bowling Association for the Disabled (Singapore), supported by President’s Challenge. Through structured training, patient coaching and opportunities to compete, she learnt the rules, techniques and discipline of para bowling. With consistent training, she progressed to competing in national-level para bowling events.

Over time, bowling became more than a sport for Siti. Training strengthened her physically while giving her opportunities to interact with others, build confidence and discover something she could take pride in.
Bowling also brought Siti and her family into a community of athletes and families on similar journeys. Along the way, they formed friendships and found people with whom they could share both challenges and achievements.
Siti’s dedication paid off when she won Gold at the National Para Bowling Championships in both 2023 and 2024. For Siti and Madam Wati, the medals represented more than sporting achievement. They reflected Siti's growing confidence, dedication and what she could accomplish when given the opportunity to develop her strengths.

To all fellow parents who are raising children with special needs: Focus on building a loving relationship with your child. Let them explore their interests, support what brings them joy, and believe in their abilities, even during difficult moments. Keep communication open, be patient through the ups and downs, and don’t hesitate to seek support. You’re not alone. Many families are walking similar journeys, and every small step forward is worth celebrating.— Mdm Wati
