Sirhan
A Fresh Start at 17: How Sirhan Took Charge of His Future

At 17, Sirhan was at a crossroads.
He had been struggling to stay engaged in mainstream education and was frequently absent from school. During this period, Sirhan was placed on probation after intervening to defend a bullied friend. Looking back, Sirhan reflects on the consequences of that moment and how it became an important growth in his life.
Despite the challenges he faces, one thing remained constant: his love for his family. Sirhan shares a close relationship with them and often speaks about wanting to make his mother proud. With his stepfather as the sole breadwinner, he also hopes to become financially independent so he can ease some of the burden at home.

With support from SHINE Children and Youth Services, Sirhan began exploring alternative pathways beyond mainstream education. Keen to pursue a more hands-on approach to learning that better matched his strengths, he was introduced to the YMCA of Singapore's Vocational and Soft Skills Programme (VaSSP), a six-month programme that combines practical skills training with personal development.
There, Sirhan learned how to set clear goals and work towards them step by step. When it came to choosing a vocational track, barbering felt like a natural fit. He enjoys working hands-on work, interacting with people, and has long hoped to open his own barbershop one day.
Throughout the programme, Sirhan shown strong commitment and steady perseverance. His trainers commended him for his quick grasp of skills and willingness to learn.
Today, Sirhan has completed his vocational training in barbering and is taking active steps towards employment. With the continued support of his VaSSP social worker, he is now working as a barber while building his portfolio and strengthening his employability.
Sirhan’s story is a reminder that when young people are given the right support, guidance and opportunities, they can begin to rebuild confidence, discover their strengths, and take charge of their future.
Your support for President’s Challenge helps youth like Sirhan gain the skills, confidence and guidance they need to move towards a more purposeful future.
