Qazy
Turning The Page - Qazy’s Journey to Finding His Words

At eight years old, Qazy was still developing his reading skills and confidence. Reading was often a struggle, and even materials designed for children below nursery level were challenging for him.
To support his learning, Qazy’s parents enrolled him in SHINE Children and Youth Services’ Reading Odyssey programme.
Designed to strengthen children’s ability to read for meaning, comprehension and knowledge, this programme combines storytelling, cognitive games, 1-to-1 guided reading with trained volunteers, and weekly reflection sessions. Learning materials are also tailored to each child’s specific needs, helping them to grow at a pace that works for them.
For Qazy, this meant being supported in ways that matched how he learns best.
During the reflection sessions, Qazy was encouraged to share his learning experiences and received constructive feedback on areas to improve, while also being praised for his strengths. Through structured, multisensory tasks, including hands-on games and picture cues, Qazy was guided by volunteers, who encouraged him to keep trying, celebrate his strengths, and build on areas for improvement.

Since joining, Qazy has made remarkable progress, advanced six reading levels and now reads a Grade 3 word list. His mother shared that his school teacher noticed a significant change, with Qazy showing increased attention in class and a willingness to work on academic tasks. Feedback sessions with the volunteers supporting him were positive.
During the cognitive games, he was collaborating well with his friend, and both took turns writing the answers, discussing and memorising items. This teamwork and interest in problem solving was great to see. In the reading session, he was able to explain the words well and give examples of situations in which the words could be used.— Reading Odyssey Guide - YM
The programme has nurtured Qazy’s love for learning and built his confidence, helping him better navigate challenges in his educational journey and look ahead to a brighter future.
Your support for SHINE Children and Youth Services makes it possible for our young beneficiaries like Qazy to continue growing in strength, confidence, and hope for the future.
